  2.  #28-34 Those who sincerely desire to be taught their duty,
  3.  Christ will guide in judgment, and teach his way. He tells the
  4.  scribe that the great commandment, which indeed includes all,
  5.  is, that of loving God with all our hearts. Wherever this is the
  6.  ruling principle in the soul, there is a disposition to every
  7.  other duty. Loving God with all our heart, will engage us to
  8.  every thing by which he will be pleased. The sacrifices only
  9.  represented the atonements for men's transgressions of the moral
  10.  law; they were of no power except as they expressed repentance
  11.  and faith in the promised Saviour, and as they led to moral
  12.  obedience. And because we have not thus loved God and man, but
  13.  the very reverse, therefore we are condemned sinners; we need
  14.  repentance, and we need mercy. Christ approved what the scribe
  15.  said, and encouraged him. He stood fair for further advance; for
  16.  this knowledge of the law leads to conviction of sin, to
  17.  repentance, to discovery of our need of mercy, and understanding
  18.  the way of justification by Christ.

  21.  #35-40 When we attend to what the Scriptures declare, as to the
  22.  person and offices of Christ, we shall be led to confess him as
  23.  our Lord and God; to obey him as our exalted Redeemer. If the
  24.  common people hear these things gladly, while the learned and
  25.  distinguished oppose, the former are happy, and the latter to be
  26.  pitied. And as sin, disguised with a show of piety, is double
  27.  iniquity, so its doom will be doubly heavy.

  30.  #41-44 Let us not forget that Jesus still sees the treasury. He
  31.  knows how much, and from what motives, men give to his cause. He
  32.  looks at the heart, and what our views are, in giving alms; and
  33.  whether we do it as unto the Lord, or only to be seen of men. It
  34.  is so rare to find any who would not blame this widow, that we
  35.  cannot expect to find many who will do like to her; and yet our
  36.  Saviour commends her, therefore we are sure that she did well
  37.  and wisely. The feeble efforts of the poor to honour their
  38.  Saviour, will be commended in that day, when the splendid
  39.  actions of unbelievers will be exposed to contempt.

  46.  not real purity of heart. He looks with pity upon the ruin of
  47.  precious souls, and weeps over them, but we do not find him look
  48.  with pity upon the ruin of a fine house. Let us then be reminded
  49.  how needful it is for us to have a more lasting abode in heaven,
  50.  and to be prepared for it by the influences of the Holy Spirit,
  51.  sought in the earnest use of all the means of grace.

  54.  #5-13 Our Lord Jesus, in reply to the disciples' question, does
  55.  not so much satisfy their curiosity as direct their consciences.
  56.  When many are deceived, we should thereby be awakened to look to
  57.  ourselves. And the disciples of Christ, if it be not their own
  58.  fault, may enjoy holy security and peace of mind, when all
  59.  around is in disorder. But they must take heed that they are not
  60.  drawn away from Christ and their duty to him, by the sufferings
  61.  they will meet with for his sake. They shall be hated of all
  62.  men: trouble enough! Yet the work they were called to should be
  63.  carried on and prosper. Though they may be crushed and borne
  64.  down, the gospel cannot be. The salvation promised is more than
  65.  deliverance from evil, it is everlasting blessedness.

  69.  persecuting the Christians, hastened their own ruin apace. Here
  70.  we have a prediction of that ruin which came upon them within
  71.  less than forty years after this. Such destruction and
  72.  desolation, that the like cannot be found in any history.
  73.  Promises of power to persevere, and cautions against falling
  74.  away, well agree with each other. But the more we consider these
  75.  things, the more we shall see abundant cause to flee without
  76.  delay for refuge to Christ, and to renounce every earthly
  77.  object, for the salvation of our souls.

  80.  #24-27 The disciples had confounded the destruction of Jerusalem
  81.  and the end of the world. This mistake Christ set right, and
  82.  showed that the day of Christ's coming, and the day of judgment,
  83.  shall be after that tribulation. Here he foretells the final
  84.  dissolution of the present frame and fabric of the world. Also,
  85.  the visible appearance of the Lord Jesus coming in the clouds,
  86.  and the gathering together of all the elect to him.
